So after all that windmill-tilting, the New York Knicks are about to spear Mike Brown as their new head coach, and there will be some laughter because of all the time they wasted to get a guy they could have gotten 15 minutes after firing Tom Thibodeau. Which matters exactly not at all in the […]
It's just us enjoying the shambolic Knicks for not receiving permission to bother all the coaches with all the reputations, just because they're the Knicks and should never not enjoy all the illusory benefits of habitual label shopping—especially if the shopping is done with an eye toward taking something someone else has.Mike Brown has been an excellent coach at other stops who only gets canned when someone tires of him asking his players to defend, and he is on any level an excellent fit for a team that seems well positioned to become a bully in the Jackson Pollock–level piefight of the Eastern Conference. His career winning percentage of .599 is the seventh-best of any coach with his volume of work, and his results as an assistant under Rick Carlisle, Gregg Popovich, and Steve Kerr are fairly self-explanatory.But he isn't a sexy hire because he is also the essential coaching retread (this is his fifth gig and fourth team), and Jimmy Dolan and his district manager Leon Rose were aiming for their version of sexy because they have always leaned into sexy in New York.

Younger coaches may be underestimated, but have more to offer than you might expect. Having a beginner's mind is a major advantage that young coaches have.I’m a 24-year-old ICF (International Coaching Federation) Associate Certified Coach. That means I’ve gone to coaching school, coached clients for over 100 hours, trained under a mentor, and passed both a written and oral exam. These aren’t just questions — they’re assumptions. Assumptions based on the belief that age equates to wisdom, that the more life experience you have, the better a coach you will be. But this isn’t true.Holding onto this belief will only hurt the coaching community. There are two main issues with the previously stated beliefs.

Current interim coach Joe Sacco will be under consideration to see what he could do with a better roster than he had this season.
Sacco did all this without complaint over his predicament. He has been a good employee for 11 seasons. Sacco has done it all, from overseeing the penalty kill to coaching the defense to calling the shots for a borderline NHL roster.Sacco did his best to keep the waters calm during a turbulent time. He left lines and pairings alone, compared to Montgomery’s preference for changing things up. Sacco made it a point to dig deeper into player relationships than he did in his previous head-coaching spin with the Colorado Avalanche from 2009 to 2013.The current University of Denver coach could have multiple suitors, considering his track record. The Pioneers won NCAA championships in 2022 and 2024 under Carle’s watch, and he coached Team USA to back-to-back gold medals in the 2024 and 2025 World Junior Championships. The Bruins assistant in charge of the defense, Leach was hired by Sweeney in the offseason after he was not retained by the Seattle Kraken, where he had been Dave Hakstol’s assistant for three seasons. Coaching is a form of development in which an experienced person, called a coach, supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance. The learner is sometimes called a coachee. Occasionally, coaching may mean an informal ...Occasionally, coaching may mean an informal relationship between two people, of whom one has more experience and expertise than the other and offers advice and guidance as the latter learns; but coaching differs from mentoring by focusing on specific tasks or objectives, as opposed to more general goals or overall development. The word "coaching" originated in the 16th century and initially referred to a method of transportation, specifically a horse-drawn carriage. It derived from the Hungarian word kocsi which meant a carriage from the village of Kocs, known for producing high-quality carriages.Over time, the term "coaching" transitioned from its literal transportation context to metaphorically represent the process of guiding and supporting individuals in their personal and professional development. The first use of the term "coach" in connection with an instructor or trainer arose around 1830 in Oxford University slang for a tutor who "carried" a student through an exam. The word "coaching" thus identified a process used to transport people from where they are to where they want to be.

The great philosopher (and possibly football coach) Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit.” That being the case, (and with apologies to Stephen Covey) Read more…
Example: A few weeks before a major international professional Tennis Championship I observed a leading professional player play 6 sets of 9 games (i.e. first player to 9 games with a 2 game lead, e.g. 9-7) and against 4 different training opponents (one left handed and three right handed), i.e. as opposed to a standard competition match of 5 sets of 6 games against 1 opponent. His coach made the training practice tougher, more challenging, more demanding and more difficult than any tournament match could ever be.The Internet has insured that there are no secrets in sport. Everyone knows what you know. Anyone can get anything, anytime, anywhere and for free. Everyone is learning something everyday. Great coaches understand this and strive to accelerate their rate of learning faster than their opposing coaches.Example: A high performance rugby coach with an outstanding success rate at the highest level spent one month each year, immediately following the end of the competitive season traveling the world learning from other coaches in other sports in other nations to ensure his rate of learning and development was superior to other coaches in his sport.Example: An international level swimming coach arranged for every swimmer is his team to learn how to shop for the right foods, how to cook, how get better quality sleep, how to meditate and how to manage their time, so that their non-training acitivites were at the same high standard as their training and preparation. Result: 3 swimmers in the Olympic team. The best coaches plan: they plan meticulously and with great attention to detail but, ultimately they also understand that the core goal of every training session is to ensure it provides the optimal environment and opportunity for their athletes to prepare.
Reeve has coached four members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This is what she's learned about coaching greatness.
If you are looking for Hall of Fame basketball players, Cheryl Reeve is a good place to start. The head coach and president of basketball operations for the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx has coached four members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (Seimone Augustus, Sylvia Fowles, Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen) and her current star (Napheesa Collier) is destined for enshrinement in the future.Think about this: After this year’s induction ceremony, four starters from Minnesota’s 2015 and 2017 championship teams will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. In an effort to gain insight into how to coach greatness, I spoke to Reeve about what she has learned about leadership during her four-decade coaching career.Hold them accountable to standards even beyond their wildest imagination for their own abilities. Great players want to be coached and great players never think that they’re good enough. We have the Minnesota Hall of Famers, but I’ve also been around other Hall of Famers, and that is the common thread.I think accountability is the greatest thing that a leader can do for that level of player. We would be doing them a disservice if we just let their own belief and drive in themselves be the only thing that they have. That’s how I’ve approached coaching the Hall of Famers that we’ve had in Minnesota.
